Introduction
The Science Subject Studies course will address the knowledge, understanding, skills and expertise required by the QTS Standards (the Qs).
The science sessions that participants attend do not stand in splendid isolation. They are part of an integrated whole which includes Professional Studies, Workshops, Learning Sets and various other events that are planned during the six weeks of the Summer Institute as well as during the rest of the year.
Participants will be actively engaged in constructing their own meanings about education, the curriculum as well as teaching and learning. Other themes run through all sessions (even if not explicitly mentioned) and these underpin participants' developing subject knowledge and pedagogy.
These themes include planning for learning, differentiation, effective use of ICT health and safety issues (very important in science), pupil misconceptions, participants' own subject knowledge, critical analysis and practical skills.
The rationale for science subject studies is embedded in reflection on good practice and will be emphasised at all times. Working at Master’s level during the summer will facilitate critical analysis of the field of education and foster original insight into the world participants are entering.
As scientists, participants come from a variety of backgrounds. Although most have a university science background, a significant minority do not. The Summer Institute course aims to develop them into science teachers who can teach science courses (which include biology, chemistry, physics and some aspects of geology and astronomy) to the full ability range at KS3 and KS4. Depending on their placement school’s needs and circumstances, some participants will have an involvement at KS5 too.
